What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a large family of virus that typically attack the respiratory system. The name comes from the Latin word “ corona” meaning crown, because of the spiky fringe that encircles these viruses.

Does Coronavirus relate to bats?

Bats serve as host for numerous viruses including Ebola virus and coronaviruses such as SARS, MERS and 2019- nCOV

How contagious is it and how does it transmit?

It is considered to be highly contagious and is transmitted via droplets of sneeze and cough of infected person

Can Coronavirus be transmitted through different food items?

Till now, there is no research which says that it can be transmitted through food items, but yes, cleanliness and safety is the key. Before handling any food item always wash hands before soap and water for 20 seconds. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with Luke warm water twice. If you have refrigerated your food reheat it and then consume it. If preparing Non-Veg food make sure to cook it well.

Who is high at risk?

In current scenario, whosoever is not taking proper precautions as advised by the Government is at risk, but people with Diabetes and other Co-morbid conditions like heart disease, respiratory disease, people with high creatinine levels, do smoking and those above the age of 65 years are at higher risk.

What should be the target range of blood sugars level in diabetes patient during the time of COVID-19?

Diabetic Patient should aim to keep the Fasting blood Glucose 80-110mg/dl and Post prandial below 160, whereas elderly people can have blood sugar 10 to 20 percent above these levels.

During this Lockdown period how can we monitor our blood sugar? It seems impossible to go out for lab test, what should be done?

Monitor your blood glucose at home with the help of a reliable glucometer. Monitor blood sugar minimum twice or thrice a week, but if on insulin monitoring should be done frequently.

Is there any alternative method for blood sugar monitoring besides glucometer to avoid excessive pricking?

Yes definitely, it is now possible to do bloodless sugar monitoring with the help of a sensor which is attached to the skin and does ambulatory glucose monitoring it is also helpful in the time of wide fluctuation in sugar level as it provides 1000 blood readings in a period of 14 days

How can diabetic patients maintain their immunity?

Maintaining a good control of diabetes helps to build one’s immunity to fight infections.

How can one boost his/her immune system?

A healthy and balanced diet should be part of the normal dietary routine. By adding some of the antiviral food to the diet one can enhance his/her immunity levels.
Garlic: Garlic is loaded with allicin compound which helps in fighting viruses and boosts immunity
Cinnamon: researches have proved that cinnamon has his property to fight against viruses
Jeera: apart from other nutritional benefits it has also antibacterial and anti-microbial properties
Amla: amla is the rich source of vit-c. When eaten regularly helps to remove toxins and prevent the body from viruses. It boosts the immune system.
Ginger: it provides antibacterial, antioxidant anti-inflammatory action to relieve the unfavourable symptoms of flu
Turmeric: bolster the immune system by increasing the immune-modulating capacity of the body

Q11. What precautions diabetes patients should take at this crucial time?

Ans- During the lockdown keep enough supply of your oral medication, insulin, insulin needles, glucometer, glucometer strips, Glucon –D to treat a low sugar reaction.
